Advocacy as Game Design

Thinking about advocacy as a game can be a productive way to develop comprehensive advocacy efforts
for music programs in higher education. In such a framework, the music executive becomes the leader of a
game design process, a role more encompassing and more interesting than being a promoter of single
events and causes.

Big Ideas, Multiple Choices, and High Stakes Consequences

Legislation, regulations, policy proposals, and debates are flowing from multiple sources and producing a flood of information and concern. Topics include the
federal relationship to higher education and tax policies affecting the non-profit sector. Choices in these areas will shape the future, for better or worse.
Big ideas generate the details but are often obscured. Identifying and understanding these big ideas and their interplay in specific situations can assist leaders
of music programs as they make decisions about what they say, how they interact, and what they do, especially at the local level.
